From garage to workshop Vukuhambe Self-help Association for the Physically Disabled in Guguletu outside Cape Town is the haven for an independent, self-reliant group of people.
Vukuhambe started out in 1987 in a corrugated iron structure attached to the house of founding member Thembisa Sokuyeko, but soon outgrew these humble premises. Their break came when the British embassy donated funds that allowed Vukuhambe to acquire its present large premises, old garages, which they renovated and turned into workshops. In 1994 they moved in and today Vukuhambe has about 30 members.
One end of the building is used for a variety of activities, such as dressmaking, shoe repairs and leatherwork. There’s even a one-man radio and TV repair shop! The other end is used as a care centre and school for mentally disabled children.
“We don’t employ people,” explains the general manager, Lungile Majiza, a founding member. “But it is an opportunity to get training and gain experience in using skills.”
Income from the goods manufactured and services rendered is shared among members to supplement their disability grants.
