Desperately seeking … independence! The Soshad day-care centre for mentally disabled children is up and running. The Soshanguve Self-help Association of People with Disabilities (SOSHAD) north of Pretoria does not have a regular source of income. Says disability activist Sello Hopane, the head of the organization: “At present we are covering running expenses from fees paid by nearly 1500 people, as well as with what is earned by the day-care centre for mentally disabled children – the one project that is up and running. But we’re hoping to get onto the Gauteng Department of Social Services subsidy programme.”
Sello has used a wheelchair all his life. He became a disability activist in 1986 and since then has held several positions. He is currently provincial treasurer of DPSA in Gauteng, as well as a branch member of the ANC.
Sello is determined to get SOSHAD to the stage where it is running smoothly as a self-sufficient business unit in the not too distant future with a major fund-raising drive.
