Musicians are doing it for themselves Monty and John in the studio“There is plenty of talent among blind musicians in this country,” declares John Mthupeng, himself a blind keyboard player. “But a lot of it goes to waste because they find it difficult to go around scouting for opportunities, offering their own compositions, finding recording studios and mixing with other musicians.”
In response to this problem, John and his long-time friend and musical partner, Monty Bogatsu, formed the South African Blind Musicians’ Association (SAMBA) to give support and guidance to those who have what it takes to become successful artists, but need a break.
“This talent is generally far from marketable – it has to be trained, moulded. The music needs to be rearranged to make it compatible with required standards,” Monty explains. “All this needs a lot of time – it can take six months to record one inexperienced artist.”
