DPI wishes to congratulate Professor Ron McCallum, Australia on his new position as Chair of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), commencing 23 October 2009. The Committee is a body of independent experts who monitor the implementation of the Convention by States Parties. **October 2009 USAID Report**
The United States Agency for International development (USAID) has just released a new report titled Transitions towards an Inclusive Future: Community-Based Vocational Skills Development and Employment Options for Persons with Disabilities in Europe & Eurasia. The Report presents internationally recognized models, approaches and best practices in programming and implementation of vocational skills development and employment-related services that have successfully transitioned persons with disabilities into open, gainful employment in diverse international contexts. **Effective Practice Guide Released in UK** The UK National Development Unit for Mental Health has just launched an effective practice guide for mental health advocates titled Independent Mental Health Advocacy: Effective Practice Guide. It provides guidance and support to mental health advocates in their everyday practice. While it centres on UK practice, some of the information is easily transferable to some of our international readers. **ILO Releases Video on Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in the Workforce** The United Nations’ International Labour Organization has released a video titled Count us In which portrays the reality of discrimination and poverty in the lives of people with disabilities without access to education and employment. **New Organization working in Africa on Education, HIV/AIDS and Human Rights** This is an invitation to share resources and opportunities with Aurora Deaf Aid Africa (ADAA). Based in the UK, this non-profit organization aims to promote the human rights and education of children and adults who are deaf or hard of hearing in Africa, particularly Burundi, Rwanda and surrounding area.
